Back in 1986 she completed a BA at Auckland University where she studied History. Helen then worked for the New Zealand Social Services until she moved to the UK in 1991. From 2001 until early 2012 Helen worked from a studio at Wysing Arts Centre, Bourn, Cambridgeshire. Helen works collaboratively and on individual projects across a variety of media including performance, sculpture, film, art happenings, and the internet. Her work in the mediums of film, sculpture and digital collage, often uses a glossy consumer aesthetic. In this work she re-positions immediately recognisable symbols of late capitalism to dissect and re-evaluates them. She has shown her work at national and international galleries, and festivals. These have included Temporary Contemporary, London; /Seconds, issue9, London; The Big Chill, Bristol; Elektronentoto Kabinenschau, Dusseldorf; The Kitchen Gallery, Liverpool; Cinesonika 2, Vancouver. One of Helens collaborative projects has been the co-founding of The Society of Xtras. The Society's first event in 2007 involved making a life size set of a front living room where people were invited to do in impromptu public performances. Other events have included, making films on a man-made beach and knitting furniture. |
